Another pet product has been recalled over fears it may be contaminated.
This time the product is dry dog food produced by Mars Petcare which is suspected to be contaminated with Salmonella Schwarzengrund.
The two dry dog food products are Krasdale Gravy dry dog food and Red Flannel Large Breed Adult Formula dry food and tests conducted by the FDA on 10 samples from seven products brands from the company revealed two positive samples of salmonella.
As a result Mars Petcare has voluntarily recalled five-pound bags of Krasdale Gravy dry dog food sold in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania with the UPC code 7513062596 and use by dates July 16, 2008 & July 17, 2008.
The 50-pound bags of Red Flannel Large Breed Adult Formula dry food sold in Pennsylvania have a UPC Code: 4286900062 and a use by date of July 12, 2008.
Although the threat may not appear to be such a concern for humans it should be remembered that Salmonella can be transferred to people handling pet food, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the product or any surfaces exposed to it.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says to date, there have been 64 cases of illness in humans related to Salmonella Schwarzengrund reported to authorities.
None of the reported cases have been directly linked to the recalled product and the FDA is working with local and state officials, and with officials at the CDC in the investigation.
Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and those with a weakened immune system.
Healthy people infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain; sometimes the salmonella infection enters the bloodstream producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting; some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain.
Well animals can be carriers and infect other animals or humans and if your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, you are advised to contact your veterinarian.
This petfood scare is the latest in a plethora of warnings regarding pet products often originating from China which have included melamine in Chinese-made dog treats, contaminated fish food, pain killers in pet food, and many companies have been forced to recall products.

Salmonella-tainted dog food is being recalled in several states. Mars Petcare US, Inc. of Tennessee announced the recall Tuesday. The company said that it is recalling 5 lb bags of Krasdale Gravy Dry Dog Food because the Salmonella contamination has the potential to make both pets and people sick.
The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) said the dog food was sold in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. The dog food bears the UPC code 753062596 and a “best buy” date of July 16, 2008 and July 17, 2008. FDA tests on a sample of the food found Salmonella bacteria. Anyone who purchased the dog food should throw it away and return the bags for a refund.

Salmonella is a potentially deadly type of food poisoning, symptoms of which include fever, abdominal pain, nausea, gas and bloody diarrhea. Symptoms appear within 36 hours of exposure, and usually last four to seven days. In very severe cases, Salmonella can lead to kidney failure and other complications. Salmonella can be particularly dangerous for children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems. Some victims of Salmonella will develop a disease called Reiter’s Syndrome, a difficult- to- treat condition that causes severe joint pain, irritation of the eyes, and painful urination. Reiter’s Syndrome can plague its victims for months or years, and can lead to chronic arthritis.
Pets can become ill with Salmonella poisoning if they eat the tainted Krasdale Gravy Dry Dog Food. But people can become sick as well, through cross-contamination. To avoid cross-contamination, anyone handling pet food should wash their hands with hot, soapy water when they are done. Likewise, pet food bowls, dishes and scooping utensils should also be washed after use. Dry food should be stored in a cool (under 80-degrees) dry place in its original bag or a container with a lid. Unused wet food should be refrigerated, and the thermostat should be no higher than 40-degrees. Any stale or spoiled food should be thrown away. Pet food also should not be stored or handled anywhere human food is stored or prepared.
The recall comes just ten days after the Pennsylvania Department of Health warned consumers in that state of the potential for Salmonella-contaminated pet food. Since January of 2006, at least 25 people in Pennsylvania have become ill with a rare strain of Salmonella called Schwarzengrund. Several of the victims have been children and infants, and nearly all of the cases have occurred in families where people have close contact with pets. State health officials were investigating the possibility that the Salmonella outbreak was linked to tainted pet food. There has been no word yet if any of those cases were caused by Krasdale Gravy Dry Dog Food.

Last time we spoke about the workings of canine digestion. Today I'll tell a little about why it's important and the effects of providing your dog with substandard food typically found in commercial dog food.
Your dog's digestive capabilities are no accident. They are a very carefully construed mechanism of its teeth, stomach and large and small intestines.
Beginning with his sharp, jagged molars, which are designed for gripping, tearing and shredding, and ending with the large intestine, which aids in the elimination of waste, all parts of the system work together to process the consumed food with purpose and deliberation.
With their short and simple digestive tracts, large amounts of vegetation, grains and fiber are difficult for dogs to process. Their systems are much more conducive to the breakdown of animal proteins and fat.
As such, pet foods which boast corn, soy or their corresponding meals as their primary ingredient are of little use to your dog, nutritionally-speaking. The "Crude Protein" analysis on pet food labels is only a measurement of the amount of nitrogen in a food -- not the quality of the protein. Because of this, pet food companies can use the cheaper by-products of human food production, such as soybean meal, to "boost" protein numbers. Animal-based protein is nutritionally superior for dogs. Animal-based protein is better absorbed and retained and is higher in essential amino acids like methionine, arginine, and taurine, all of which are absent in plant-based proteins.
Pancreatitis and Fatty Liver (Hepatic Lipidosis) are diseases that can be caused by a variety of factors such as infection, exposure to toxins, stress and improper diet. Pet food that is very high in saturated fats can certainly be a contributing factor.
Diabetes is a chronic degenerative disease of dogs that can be caused by a variety of factors such as genetics, stress and diet -- specifically, the feeding of excess amounts of simple carbohydrates. Many pet foods are loaded with simple carbohydrates such as white flour, sucrose, glucose and fructose. These are cheap, highly processed carbohydrate sources that can stress the pancreas, leading to diabetes.In addition, clinical studies suggest that the long term feeding of chemical antioxidants (preservatives such as BHA, BHT and ethoxyquin) have extreme adverse health effects on animals.
As such, for optimal digestive health, it would seem to be a no-brainer to feed your beloved dog a diet rich in animal-based proteins and fats, moderate in carbohydrates, and free of chemical additives and preservatives. When perusing the commercial dog foods available in the grocery store aisles you might find this to be a tricky proposition. It seems most are nutritionally substandard, in at least one respect or another, with many failing in nearly all respects.
This is made even more difficult because dog food manufacturers use deliberately confusing double-talk to make the food appear much more nutritious than it really is. In fact, they lobby against the FDA for their 'right' to keep it confusing.
The ideal solution is to feed your pet freshly prepared food, thereby giving you the power to provide all the nutrients he needs to maintain a healthy body. Combining animal-based proteins with vegetables, pasta, rice, cereals and other foods will furnish all the requisite protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals, without all those pesky by-products, fillers and chemical additives and preservatives. Pet Food Recall: China Has Been Spiking Cat & Dog Food All Along

While Americans are panicked over the pet food recall - it has been revealed that China has been spiking dog and cat food all along. For years, producers of animal feed all over China have secretly supplemented their feed with the substance, called melamine, a cheap additive that looks like protein in tests, even though it does not provide any nutritional benefits, according to melamine scrap traders and agricultural workers here, reports the New York Times.
Pet Food Recall: China Has Been Spiking Cat & Dog Food All Along
Melamine is at the center of a recall of 60 million packages of pet food, after the chemical was found in wheat gluten linked this month to the deaths of at least 16 pets and the illness of possibly thousands of pets in the United States.

"Many companies buy melamine scrap to make animal feed, such as fish feed,” said Ji Denghui, general manager of the Fujian Sanming Dinghui Chemical Company, which sells melamine. “I don’t know if there’s a regulation on it. Probably not. No law or regulation says ‘don’t do it,’ so everyone’s doing it. The laws in China are like that, aren’t they? If there’s no accident, there won’t be any regulation." The Times reported that powdery scraps of melamine -- a chemical used to make plastics and fertilizers -- were secretly mixed into animal feed in China.
“The melamine powder has been dubbed ‘fake protein’ and is used to deceive those who raise animals into thinking they are buying feed that provides higher nutritional value,” The Times reported.

The newspaper also said the practice is widespread in China, which has little regulatory supervision. The paper also notes that evidence is mounting that Chinese protein exports have been tainted with melamine and that its use in agricultural regions like this one is widespread. But the government has issued no recall of any food or feed product here in China.
The Chinese government disputes reports that melamine-tainted products from its country caused pets to die. But on Friday, that country banned the use of melamine in wheat gluten, rice protein, and other vegetable proteins exported from China or used in domestic food supplies.

The Company is taking this voluntary action after learning that the FDA has confirmed the presence of melamine, a substance not approved for use in food, in rice protein concentrate used by the contract manufacturer in the production of some of these products.
It should be noted the "Blue" canned dog and cat food products were not formulated or labeled to contain rice protein concentrate, and that the manufacturer, American Nutrition, Inc. added the rice protein concentrate to these products without Blue Buffalo Company's knowledge or consent. For this reason, Blue Buffalo Company is concerned that it can not have any faith in the integrity, or the accuracy of the ingredient labels of any of its products manufactured by American Nutrition. Therefore Blue Buffalo is withdrawing all products manufactured by American Nutrition, including products that American Nutrition claims do not contain rice protein. The FDA investigation into the inclusion of the rice protein by American Nutrition in Blue Buffalo's products is ongoing.
Do we really know for sure if this is true about them not knowing or is it a cop out? So can we TRUST this company or can't we? Hi again. Let me ask you a question. Would you or should you trust commercially made pet food even if it has not be recalled? My answer to that is NO no matter what. First off with all the chemicals and preservatives in the pet food you will poison your pet. You can continue to buy food at the pet store, but when your pet is not himself and you take your pet to the vet and the vet tells you his kidneys are failing and he doesn't have much time left what are you going to do then ? Cornell's College of Veterinary Medicine develops protein tests to accurately detect pet food-poisoned dogs
Even though Diamond, Country Value and Professional brand dog foods have been recalled for containing highly toxic aflatoxins, they have caused at least 100 dog deaths in recent weeks, say Cornell University veterinarians, who are growing increasingly alarmed. Some kennels and consumers around the nation and possibly in more than two dozen other countries remain unaware of the tainted food, and as a result, they continue to give dogs food containing a lethal toxin. To better screen affected dogs so they can be treated as soon as possible, Cornell veterinarians report that they now have a new test, adapted from one used in humans, to accurately assess aflatoxin poisoning in dogs. Currently, about two-thirds of dogs that show symptoms after eating the tainted food die.
"Entire kennels have been wiped out, and because of the holiday these past few weeks, the dispersal of recall information was disrupted," says Sharon Center, a professor of veterinary medicine who specializes in liver function and disease at the College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell, which is emerging as a central clearinghouse for information about the dog food poisoning.
The Cornell Vet College is continually updating its Web site to keep the public and veterinarians informed as new information on the poisonings emerge. Cornell's Animal Health Diagnostic Center (AHDC) is analyzing blood and liver samples from sick dogs around the country, testing suspected dog food, conducting autopsies and collecting as many livers as possible from dead dogs to confirm cause of death, tracking dogs that have died and following up on the health of dogs that survive the food poisoning.
